Emma Tildesley

Emma is a botanical artist based in a small village in the beautiful Worcestershire countryside in the UK. She specialises in watercolour and coloured pencil, painting complex subjects that require great focus, commitment, and patience.

After studying Art and design at college in the early 2000’s, Emma’s artistic journey took her to the Society of Botanical Artists where she began studying Botanical illustration and honed her technical skills. She completed her studies of the Society’s DLDC course in 2022 and graduated with distinction. She has since become a fellow member of the society.

Throughout her career, Emma has mastered a variety of artistic mediums, including watercolour, coloured pencil, and graphite. She uses these mediums to work on paintings for competitions, exhibitions and commissions. Her signature style is characterised by a remarkable attention to detail, achieved through countless hours of observation, life drawing and meticulous rendering. Each leaf, petal and stem in her compositions exudes a lifelike quality that invites viewers to appreciate the intricacies of nature on an intimate level.

Keen to share her love of botanical art, Emma holds online classes where she shares her skills, knowledge and enthusiasm with aspiring artists. She finds immense joy in nurturing the creative path of others.

Emma draws inspiration for her illustrations from the nature surrounding her and from the flowers, fruit, and vegetables she grows in her own garden. She enjoys exploring new techniques and subjects while remaining rooted in her reverence for nature. Her artwork not only captures the essence of plant life but also invites the viewer to contemplate the intricate beauty that surrounds us.

One of the most important components of her artwork is the paper she works on. It must be archival, reliable, able to handle lots of wet washes, and most importantly retain sharp details. Saunders Waterford Hot Pressed is the perfect paper for this. "The quality is consistent, the colours stay rich and true and no matter how many layers are used, it is always possible to achieve fine details. It never lets me down". Saunders Waterford has been Emma's paper of choice since the very beginning of her artistic career.
