Daniel Lopez

Daniel Lopez is a Spanish-born artist based in Birmingham, UK, whose practice is rooted in the expressive possibilities of watercolour. Known for his ability to capture the fleeting atmosphere of urban life, Daniel’s work often explores the balance between architecture, movement and light, revealing the quiet harmony that exists within the rhythm of the city.

After training in fine art in Spain and Cuba, developing a multidisciplinary practice, Daniel gradually focused his attention on watercolour for its immediacy, luminosity and unpredictability. He is particularly drawn to the medium’s transparency and fluidity, which allow him to work spontaneously and respond intuitively to his subjects. Through bold, gestural brushwork and the careful control of washes, his paintings often evoke the sensation of a moment rather than a static scene.

Daniel’s inspirations lie in the energy of the city, the atmosphere of rainy streets, and the interplay of nature with the built environment. He is also deeply engaged with the materiality of his craft, believing that the quality of the paper is essential to the strength of a watercolour. Working with Saunders Waterford paper, he values its durability, texture and ability to hold vibrant washes, which enable him to push the medium to its limits on both small and monumental scales.

Daniel exhibits regularly and welcomes collectors and visitors into his studio, where he shares his process and passion for the medium. Alongside his artistic practice, he teaches workshops both in person and online, helping others to discover the unique character and expressive potential of watercolour.
